Book Jacket Design

The War & Peace is a novel by Leo Tolstoy who describes 19th century history of Russia. The book jacket design was inspired by Tolstoy’s representation of the Tsarist society, nature of the war, and love. Each volume has very own mood and flow of the story that can be portrayed as an element of the nature. In the first volume the writer describes the nature of the war between France and Russia. Two major forces, Russian Coat army and French army, were represented as two wind forces that are fighting against each other. The design of the cover incorporates a picture of the city where most of the events in the volume take place. In the first volume it is St.Petersburg. Second volume describes Russian aristocracy and love affairs among this social group. The volume has stormy and soft flow of the events. The water became a representation of romantic but at the same time bitter relationships between characters. Third volume’s culmination is the fire in Moscow. The design of the third volume has an element of the fire that also represents burning desire of Napoleon to conquer Russia.
