LACE COLLAR Fashion editorial for graduating exhibition project for DEC in media arts, displaying skills in styling, set design, photography and editing. This series of photographs examines the social realities of women throughout the 40s, 50s and 60s. With this project I explored the pre-determined roles in western society that women were required to fill, from household to workplace environments. I chose to work in the medium of photography in order to create visually powerful and concrete illustrations of historical realities. It also permitted me to provide my own commentary on how women were represented in fashion photography and advertisement during this period. I think it is interesting to see how these photographs visually play on the images of women from this period that have been engrained in the contemporary consciousness, questioning the validity of the ideals they represented. Beyond the skill sets in photography and digital media I have acquired in this program, Creative Arts has taught me to question what I see, to go beyond what meets the eye and seek all the elements that form the true meaning and message of a work.
