The Hallie- New Brighton Pool Building Design

New Brighton Park is a historic waterfront park in the Hastings district, Vancouver, with a thriving residential area to the south and a lively shopping complex to the north. The park is a year-round recreational area with an off-leash dog area and waterfront walkway. New Brighton Park is very popular and many people have extensively used the public facility since 1935. The park was initially built to create a tidal basin, providing a safer alternative for marine swimming in the park and solving other problems related to ocean currents and port activities. Considering the age and the popularity of the pool during summer, the pool will need to be better maintained. There may be different systems that need to be replaced such as eroding reinforcements, leaks, corroding pipes, or other malfunctioning electronics. Additionally, the Vancouver Parks Board is currently improving and expanding New Brighton Park. The proposed project's goal is to provide a location for extracurricular activities for locals especially children, and other communities nearby as well as to potentially increase public interest in the area’s natural environment. Since the city’s objective is to renovate the surrounding area of the pool, the proposed pool house design will be complement and can be combined with the improvements of New Brighton Park. Although the renovation will consider other surrounding aspects of the swimming pool, this project focuses on the improvement of the public’s overall swimming experience, increasing social space, enhancing the general user experience, and improving the accessibility of other facilities. The art studio and a family shower room will be added to the design. One of the objectives of this project is to maintain as much of the existing infrastructure as possible so that most of the pools and surrounding decks remain intact. The proposed design of the north side of the pool is for it to be transformed into 2000 square foot wooden deck accompanied by an area beside the Cafe for rest and enjoying the sunlight. This new social space provides not only an ideal setting for leisure but also a superb area for sightseeing the North Shore mountains and an area to view the entire pool.
