Back In the 50's - Inspired by Dior "NewLook"

The earth laughs in flowers. Dior Newlook, 1950s The 50 ‘s was an important period in the history of fashion and of famous people. Indeed, many ordinary people came from different fields in order to become famous and, consequently, they marked in everyone’s heart. Not only did they mark the 1950s but they became legends marking generation after generation. Amongst these legends we can remember Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Elvis Presley, Salvador Dali, Brigitte Bardot, Ginger Rogers and many others. I decided to elaborate my Dior New look project on Ginger Rogers (1911-1995). Rogers was an elegant American actress, dancer and singer known for her stunning performances in films. I’ll work on this project with a distinct vision of Ginger Rogers to make her shine under The Dior new look lights. Usually, beauty comes in all shapes, but in the 50’s, a ground breaking new silhouette redefined women’s post-war style and revived France’s fashion industry. Two shapes determined the soft femininity of Christian Dior’s ‘’Newlook ‘’ silhouette. Waist 26, known by « Huit » was one of these shapes that brings elegance by reflecting the new Dior look for women, which consists of a small waist with exaggerated hourglass curves. In order to create such a look, they used undergarments and hip cushion, placing padding around the hips to get the “Huit” effect. Another different shape is the waspy waist with flowing skirts, fitted waist, rounded shapes and shoulders. To add volume to the skirts, they used a Crinoline undergarment and layered fabrics as well. The 50’s was all about shapes and accessories: hats, head pieces, gloves and pearl necklace were important elements that completed every look. Inspired by Christian Dior’s world of flowers, I decided to represent « La Femme Fleur de Dior » by creating a dress with a feminist mermaid dress silhouette. The dress includes rounded strapless breast cuts, a small waist, exaggerated rounded hips and a pencil skirt on the bottom. Starting at the knees we can find a layering of tulle covered by layering of organza. The dress is elegantly covered by hand work detailed flowers and pearls. -LET IT BLOOM -
